New York, United Air Lines by Stanley Galli (1960) captures the magnetic pull of New York City at the height of the jet age. In this classic mid-century travel poster, Galli frames a bold, close view of the Statue of Liberty—Liberty Enlightening the World—against a radiant, simplified field of color. Created for United Air Lines as commercial aviation boomed after World War II, the piece distills the city’s promise and the optimism of modern travel into a single, unforgettable icon.
This listing offers a high-quality fine art print of Galli’s poster, produced by The Unique Maps Co. on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Printed with museum-grade, fade-resistant inks, it arrives in a range of sizes from intimate to statement-making. Add a frame in black, white, or natural wood to receive it ready to hang, and personalize yours with a commemorative caption, date, or custom sizing. We’re delighted to tailor margins, cropping, or color calibration upon request to suit your space.
Stanley “Stan” Galli (1912–2009) was a prolific American illustrator whose career bridged editorial art, advertising, and fine painting. Born in San Francisco and trained at the California Art Institute, he contributed lively cover art and features for leading mid-century magazines and designed everything from postage stamps to Navy training illustrations during the war. In the 1950s and ’60s, Galli became especially admired for his crisply composed, high-impact posters—work that blended painterly observation with the clean geometry of modern graphic design.
The subject here—New York, heralded by the Statue of Liberty—anchors the poster’s historical resonance. Lady Liberty has long been the emblem of arrival, welcome, and aspiration in New York Harbor; and by the 1960s, air travel had become the new gateway to the city. Galli’s pairing of a national symbol with airline branding speaks to that postwar moment when commercial flight reshaped how people encountered place, identity, and possibility.
Visually, the design is irresistible. A sunlit ground in yellow-gold meets rich browns and inky blacks that model the statue’s sculptural planes, while the crown’s spikes read as bold, geometric rays. Clean, confident contours and smart negative space reflect the Modernist sensibility of the era, giving the image a timeless clarity that works beautifully in today’s interiors. It’s a striking piece for anyone who loves mid-century style, New York history, or iconic American imagery—equally at home in an industrial loft, a minimalist living room, or a retro-inspired office.
This print makes a thoughtful gift for New Yorkers and New York–at-heart travelers alike—perfect for birthdays, housewarmings, Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or to celebrate someone’s recent trip to the city. Whether commemorating a first visit or honoring a lifelong connection, Galli’s New York brings the city’s energy and optimism to your walls.
