Norway – the land of the midnight sun by Thorolf Holmboe invites you into the glowing hush of a northern summer night, where fjords, forests and distant peaks are washed in a low, everlasting light. Created as a promotional travel poster in the early 20th century, it distills the magic of Norway’s most famous natural phenomenon into a single, luminous vista. Holmboe—Norwegian painter, illustrator, and designer—studied under Hans Gude in Berlin and Fernand Cormon in Paris, and his work spans Naturalism, Neo-romanticism, Realism and Impressionism. He is represented in the National Gallery of Norway, and here he channels that painterly training into a poster that is both evocative artwork and irresistible invitation to explore the North.

This fine art edition is produced by The Unique Maps Co. as a museum-grade giclée print on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Multiple sizes are available, with optional framing and matting to suit Scandinavian minimalism or rustic cabin interiors alike. Personalization is welcome—add a caption, travel date or coordinates—and custom sizing can be arranged to fit your space perfectly.

About the artist: Thorolf Holmboe was part of the generation that bridged studio painting with the emerging language of graphic design. Trained in Europe’s leading ateliers, he brought a refined, atmospheric sensibility to poster art, helping to shape a distinctly Norwegian visual identity in the early 1900s. His versatility across styles meant he could move from naturalistic observation to romantic mood with ease—an ideal blend for capturing Norway’s landscapes and light.

Why this subject matters: the “midnight sun” is one of Norway’s great natural wonders, where above the Arctic Circle daylight lingers through the night for weeks on end. As steamship routes, railways and organized tours expanded, images like this fueled a surge of curiosity about the North. This poster crystallizes that allure—majestic yet intimate, it speaks to travelers who have stood by a still fjord at midnight and watched the horizon smolder rather than set.

Design and color: dominated by deep greens and warm browns in the headlands and trees, the composition is counterbalanced by a band of orange-gold that melts into gentle blue-greens across water and sky. Holmboe’s loose, deliberate brushwork softens edges and blends the horizon, evoking the slow drift of time under polar light. Organic silhouettes of pines frame a simplified mountain form, a subtle dialogue between Art Nouveau curves and poster-like clarity. The palette and pacing of light make this a striking statement piece—serene, atmospheric, and endlessly livable.

A thoughtful gift for anyone enchanted by Norway—newlyweds returning from a honeymoon through the fjords, hikers and skiers, or friends who dream of chasing the midnight sun. Ideal for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, a housewarming, or to commemorate a special trip north, this print brings the quiet wonder of a Norwegian summer night into your home year-round.
