Norges Jubilæumsutstilling 1914 Kristiania by Brynjulf Larsson is a striking Art Nouveau travel poster created for Norway’s Jubilee Exhibition of 1914—held in the city then known as Kristiania (today Oslo). On the eve of the First World War, the exhibition celebrated a century of Norwegian progress and the 100th anniversary of the 1814 Constitution, and Larsson’s design captures that spirit with an emblematic meeting of sea, forest, and industry. The poster’s bold title—Norges Jubilæumsutstilling 1914 Kristiania—anchors a composition where cranes, rigging, and a billowing sail share the stage with trees and racing clouds, projecting national confidence and modern vitality.
This fine art print is meticulously produced on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Available in a range of sizes, it can be ordered unframed or ready-to-hang in gallery-quality frames. The Unique Maps Co. also offers personalization—add a dedication, commemorative dates, or a custom caption—to create a piece tailored to your space or a special recipient.
About the artist: While detailed biographical records on Brynjulf Larsson are scarce, he is recognized as a Norwegian illustrator and poster designer active in the early 20th century, working in and around Kristiania during a fertile moment for commercial art and national branding. His work reflects the transition from late Art Nouveau to early modernism—clean silhouettes, assertive typography, and imagery that balances decorative rhythm with a streamlined, contemporary sensibility.
The subject is significant to Norwegian cultural history. The 1914 Jubilee Exhibition marked a proud milestone for a young nation asserting its identity through art, industry, and maritime prowess. By placing modern machinery beside a sailing vessel and wooded shoreline, the poster evokes Oslo’s harbor and the country’s deep relationship with the sea, trade, and timber—making it a resonant emblem for anyone with ties to Norway’s capital or its coastal landscapes. As a travel poster, it is both an invitation and a commemoration, echoing the optimistic energy that surrounded the exhibition.
Larsson’s color choices—dominant greens tempered by golden yellows, in dialogue with deep blacks, warm browns, and flashes of blue—create a vivid, sunlit atmosphere. Bold outlines and geometric silhouettes sculpt the cranes and rigging, while the sail, trees, and cloud forms remain supple and fluid, a classic Art Nouveau interplay of line and volume. The typography is not merely functional; it completes the composition, locking image and message into a single, modern statement. For interiors, this print excels in rooms that favor natural materials and mid-century or Scandinavian design, where its greens and ochres can harmonize with wood tones and textured textiles.
A thoughtful gift for lovers of Norway and Scandinavian design, this piece suits Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, housewarmings, or to welcome home anyone who has recently traveled to Oslo. It’s a conversation-starting reminder of national heritage, technological optimism, and the enduring beauty of Norway’s landscapes.
